Runners Will Take on 24-Hour Sand Run World Record to Benefit the Special Operations Warrior Foundation

The 2012 World 24-Hour Run Championships overall winner and Women's World 24-Hour Championships Runner-Up, who both set the American 24hr run records for their genders this year, will be joined by four other ultra runners to make an attempt at the Guinness World Record(c) for “Greatest Distance Run on the Sand in 24hrs” by an individual. The goal of this effort is to raise awareness and funds for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation (SOWF).

The record breaking attempt will take place February 16-17th at Tops'l Beach and Racquet Resort in Destin, Florida, on the sugar white beaches of the Gulf of Mexico, in conjunction with the Destin 50 Beach Ultra race. The current record, as certified by Guinness World Records(c), is 83.04 miles and was set by Christian Burke in 2010.

Mike Morton (FL), the current World Champion and American record holder at the 24hr run, 2012 Badwater 135M winner and active duty member of Army special operations, will be leading a strong group of ultra runners in this challenge. He is flanked by fellow American 24hr record holder and World Championships Runner-Up, Connie Gardner (OH). Mike and Connie's teammate at the 2012 World 24-Hour Run Championships, Joe Fejes (GA), will be looking to turn his wealth of fixed-time run experience into a win at this event. The final three runners for this record breaking attempt, Sean 'Run Bum' Blanton (GA), Dustin Krajewski (CO) and Marie-Ange Smith (SC), are aiming to make their mark on the 24hr running world with solid performances.

Every dollar of pledges and donations made in the name of this record breaking attempt will go directly to SOWF. The overhead expenses for this event are being covered by the Destin 50 Beach Ultra and its sponsors. Make a pledge or immediate donation to the SOWF for this amazing event at

The benefiting charity, the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, is one of the highest rated charities in the nation and provides full college scholarships for the children of military special operations personnel killed in combat or training and also provides immediate financial assistance to severely wounded special operations personnel.
